Suncable OHTL Hydrological Assessment

Overhead Transmission Line Hydrological Assessment

Project Owner

suncable

Location

Northern Territory

Completed

2024

Civil IQ undertook a preliminary hydrological assessment to support planning of the proposed Suncable overhead transmission line across the Northern Territory. The assessment identified significant waterway crossings, flood risks and viable transmission span lengths to inform early project planning.

Project Overview

Civil IQ developed a rapid hydrological assessment methodology to evaluate major watercourse crossings along approximately 700 kilometres of proposed transmission infrastructure. Using available topographic, hydrological and catchment data, the assessment identified locations requiring longer transmission spans and highlighted areas where flood behaviour could influence corridor selection and design.

Challenges

  • $
Assessing a transmission corridor extending across hundreds of kilometres of remote Northern Territory landscapes.
  • $
Limited data availability across large areas required efficient assessment methods and careful interpretation.
  • $
Extensive floodplains required higher-level investigation to identify locations warranting more detailed assessment.

Outcomes

  • $
Developed a practical, repeatable screening methodology for assessing flood risk along the transmission corridor.
  • $
Identified significant waterway crossings and potential span constraints for early design planning.
  • $
Provided hydrological input to support corridor development and future detailed investigations.

Scope

  • $
