Preparation of an Erosion and Sediment Control Plan for a steep coastal section of the Captain Cook Highway near Port Douglas.

Project Overview

Civil IQ was engaged to prepare an Erosion and Sediment Control Plan for slope remediation works approximately 12km south of Port Douglas directly adjacent to the Captain Cook Highway.

The purpose of the ESCP was to detail and communicate ESC measures required during the construction phase of the project enabling the Contractor to achieve compliance with relevant legislation and guidelines applicable to the project.

In collaboration with the Contractor, Civil IQ provided a feasible means of constructing the works while implementing leading practice drainage and sediment control measures, taking into account site specific opportunities and constraints.

Challenges

Numerous challenges were associated with the development of the project:

Constructability methods including grouting and ESC control measures to manage and mitigate.
$
Extremely limited space available between works on the steep slopes and the Captain Cook Highway. Measures implemented needed to fit within tight spaces and be readily moved.
$
Significant steep gully through the centre of the project area required staging to consider any rain events and tracking.

Outcomes

Key project outcomes achieved were:

Successful collaboration with Geovert contractors during construction phase and staging of works.

Extremely limited space available between works on steep slopes and the Captain Cook Highway. Measures implemented needed to fit within tight spaces and be readily moved.

RPEQ certification to meet the intent of IECA and to requirements of DTMR specification MRTS52.
