Etty Bay Road Crossing Upgrade
Improving flood resilience through detailed road crossing design
Project Owner

2025-2026
Detailed civil engineering design for the upgrade of Etty Bay Road, improving flood resilience, safety and long-term network reliability.
Project Overview
Civil IQ was engaged by Cassowary Coast Regional Council to deliver the detailed design for the replacement of the existing single-lane bridge on Etty Bay Road with a new two-lane culvert crossing.
The project included widening the road approaches, maintaining the existing level of flood immunity and coordinating the relocation of essential services including water and telecommunications infrastructure. Working within a constrained site, the design balanced hydraulic performance, road geometry and constructability while minimising impacts on surrounding properties.
Civil IQ provided geotechnical investigations, hydrologic and hydraulic assessment, road design, service relocations, approvals, bill of quantities and construction support to deliver a practical, cost-effective solution.
Challenges
- Maintaining traffic access throughout design and construction planning.
- Designing within a constrained creek corridor and existing road alignment.
- Managing flood behaviour while improving long-term road resilience.
- Balancing hydraulic performance, constructability and environmental considerations.
Outcomes
- Delivered a practical, constructable design supporting long-term flood resilience.
- Improved road safety and network reliability for the local community.
- Achieved an efficient engineering solution balancing hydraulic performance and construction costs.
- Supported successful project delivery through coordinated technical documentation.
Scope
- Geotechnical investigations and assessments
- Detailed design
- Pavement design
- Hydraulic modelling
- Stormwater managment
- Bill of quantities and cost estimation
- Construction phase services
- RPEQ certification
