Detailed design to rehabilitate eroded blast wall embankments at the Mount Stuart Training Area, improving long-term stability and maintaining Defence infrastructure.
Project Overview
Civil IQ was engaged to prepare the detailed rehabilitation design for three existing blast wall embankments at the Mount Stuart Training Area in Townsville. Ongoing erosion within the backfill zones had reduced long-term stability, requiring practical engineering solutions that satisfied Defence standards while extending the service life of the structures.
The project included site assessment, detailed earthworks design, preparation of bill of quantities and RPEQ certification. Rehabilitation measures incorporated engineered embankment profiles, erosion protection and geogrid reinforcement to improve stability while also addressing the impacts of burrowing animals within the embankments.
Challenges
- Rehabilitation of existing blast wall embankments affected by long-term erosion.
- Designing stable earthworks on steep embankment batters.
- Incorporating geogrid reinforcement to improve stability and minimise damage from burrowing animals.
- Meeting Department of Defence design requirements and certification standards.
Outcomes
- Delivered detailed rehabilitation designs for three blast wall embankments.
- Improved long-term embankment stability and erosion resilience.
- Achieved compliant designs certified to Department of Defence requirements.
Scope
- Site assessment
- Civil earthworks
- Detailed design
- Bill of quantities
- RPEQ certification
