Civil IQ provided the detailed design and construction phase services for the rehabilitation of a 1 km section of the Burdekin River northern embankment near Home Hill. Following significant erosion during major flood events, the project developed a practical river rehabilitation solution to stabilise the embankment and protect surrounding agricultural land and infrastructure before the 2026–27 wet season.
Project Overview
Civil IQ was engaged by North Queensland Dry Tropics to prepare the detailed design for the rehabilitation of a 1 km section of the Burdekin River northern embankment upstream of the Bruce Highway crossing near Home Hill. The project responded to ongoing riverbank erosion that had intensified during the 2025 flood events, requiring a robust engineering solution capable of withstanding future high-flow conditions.
Working closely with the client and construction team, Civil IQ delivered civil, environmental and geotechnical design, hydrology and hydraulic assessments, river rehabilitation design and 12d modelling, together with construction phase services to support delivery before the onset of the wet season.
Challenges
- Developing a practical rehabilitation design for highly erodible silty-sandy embankment soils.
- Coordinating with local quarries to secure suitable rock materials that met project specifications and quantities.
- Maintaining accurate quantity estimates and design information within a dynamic river environment affected by seasonal landscape changes.

- Delivered a detailed rehabilitation design for approximately 1 km of the Burdekin River northern embankment.
