Design and construction of gully rehabilitation works to restore stability and improve long-term environmental outcomes at Havilah Station.

Project Overview

The Havilah Station gully rehabilitation project was delivered to address erosion and improve the long-term stability of degraded drainage channels on the property.

Funded by the Australian Government through the Great Barrier Reef Foundation, the project was undertaken in close collaboration with NQ Dry Tropics, local landholders and Hallorans & Sons. Civil IQ provided the civil, environmental and geotechnical design, hydrology and hydraulic assessments, technical specifications, cost estimates and construction support.

Works were completed prior to the 2024 wet season, with rehabilitation measures performing successfully through subsequent rainfall events and delivering improved environmental outcomes.

Challenges

  • $
    Limited construction budget and timeframes
  • $
Remote location and supply of water and materials
  • $
Constraints of existing vegetation and previously works that were fixed elements

Outcomes

  • $
Design that implemented environmental solutions and worked in with the terrain, geotechnical and hydraulic conditions
  • $
Provision of jute matting throughout, a new application for gully works, which assists vegetation establishment and is biodegradable over time
  • $
Successful completion and implementation of all works post construction
  • $
Great Barrier Reef Foundation and NQ Dry Tropics approval for all design and construction works

Scope

  • $
    Civil, environmental and geotechnical design
  • $
    Hydrology and hydraulics
  • $
    Gully erosion remediation
  • $
    Technical specification
  • $
    Construction of all works
  • $
    Bill of quantities
  • $
