Swept Path Road Upgrade
Enabling oversized freight movements through the Ports main access road
Project Owner
Port of Townsville Ltd
Location
Townsville
Completed
2026
Civil IQ delivered the detailed design for upgrades to Benwell Road and surrounding internal roads within the Port of Townsville, supporting the transport of oversized wind farm infrastructure between the port berths and the dedicated wind farm laydown area.
Project Overview
Following completion of the dedicated wind farm laydown area and access road within the East Port precinct, upgrades to Benwell Road and adjoining internal roads were required to complete the transport route for wind turbine components arriving through the Port of Townsville.
Civil IQ was engaged by Port of Townsville Limited to undertake the detailed design of the road upgrades, including construction phase services, ensuring the route could safely accommodate oversized transport movements while integrating with existing port infrastructure.
Challenges
- Designing road geometry to accommodate a 100-metre design vehicle through critical turning movements.
- Balancing swept path requirements with existing services, structures, lot boundaries and operational constraints.
- Working closely with Port of Townsville to refine the design and minimise impacts on existing infrastructure and port operations.
Outcomes
- Developed a coordinated design footprint that met Port of Townsville operational requirements.
- Enabled the safe transport of oversized wind turbine components through the East Port precinct.
- Delivered a compliant design in accordance with swept path requirements and relevant design standards and specifications.
Scope
- Road geometry
- Pavement design
- Drainage design
- Bill of quantities
- Design modelling & drafting
- RPEQ certification
- Construction phase services
