Lucinda Groyne Field Replacement

Coastal engineering for the replacement of ageing shoreline infrastructure

Project Owner

Hinchinbrook shire council

Location

Lucinda

Completed

2024

Civil IQ developed the detailed design for the replacement of eight ageing groyne structures along the Lucinda foreshore, delivering a practical long-term coastal protection solution supported by planning approvals, stakeholder engagement and detailed engineering assessment.

Project Overview

Eight existing groyne structures constructed from geotextile sand containers had reached the end of their design life and required replacement to maintain shoreline protection along the Lucinda foreshore.

Civil IQ worked with Hinchinbrook Shire Council to develop a replacement solution, undertaking planning approvals, multi-criteria assessment, coastal engineering design and stakeholder engagement to identify the preferred option and progress the project through detailed design.

Challenges

  • $
Balancing community expectations across three replacement options, including geotextile sand containers, timber and rock groynes.
  • $
Navigating planning and environmental approvals associated with replacing coastal protection infrastructure using rock.
  • $
Assessing the availability, transport and cost of suitable armour rock for a regional coastal location.

Outcomes

  • $
Achieved community and Council support for the preferred rock groyne solution.
  • $
Secured town planning and environmental approvals for the proposed replacement works.
  • $
Completed the detailed design for replacement rock groynes, including assessment of suitable armour rock sources and constructability.
